Our Animal Rescue Team—including veterinarians who flew in from all over Latin America to help—is on the ground in Puerto Rico to assess the damage and ascertain what is most urgently needed in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Lack of electricity, fresh water, vaccinations and medical supplies has left so many animals in desperate shape. The level of destruction is overwhelming.
Our first priority on arrival was to check on the safety of the people who run Puerto Rico’s animal shelters and clinics; now, with their help, we are working to figure out how to rebuild. HSI has long been active in Puerto Rico through our spay/neuter program, and we are focused on getting its veterinary clinics back up and running as soon as possible. If they are able to begin operating again, they can fulfill a demand for treatment that is now greater than ever.
The situation for animals in Puerto Rico was hard even before this disaster hit, and we, along with our affiliate The Humane Society of the United States, are committed to continuing to help them as the territory struggles to recover.
Thank you for standing with us and for all of your support during this challenging time.
