News from the world of whales and dolphins
URGENT: Just 24 hours to tell the government what you think…
Did you hear about the sperm whale who washed up in Spain in April with 29 kilos of plastic in his stomach? It’s tragedies like this that really hammer home the need for change in our throwaway society.
In response to this appetite for change, the UK government has asked the public for our views. They want to know what we think about extending the charge on plastic bags to other single-use plastic, like drinks bottles, coffee cups, cutlery, straws and food packaging. This is an important opportunity to make our voices heard.
ACT NOW – the consultation closes at 11:59 PM tomorrow – 18 May.
We’ve made it quick and easy for you to take part – it’ll only take you a couple of minutes.
Plastic never goes away. Every bit of plastic that has ever been made is still on our planet, just in smaller and smaller pieces. It pollutes the oceans for generations, posing a serious risk to whales and dolphins and other marine life.
Just a year after the 5p plastic bag charge was introduced, use of these carrier bags was down a massive 85% showing that small changes can make a massive difference. So please take this chance to be part of the solution and tell the UK government what you think.
Thank you, as always, for being part of WDC. As you’ll see from the stories below, together we are delivering real change for whales and dolphins.
Julia Thoms, WDC campaigns manager
Thomas Cook has dropped 29 ‚attractions‘ including dolphin parks, because they fail to meet welfare standards. We believe it’s important to work with the travel industry, not against them, to help them with this process. We are getting results. Together we will end dolphin cruelty forever.
You make change happen
A WDC supporter got in touch to tell us she’d been shocked to see whale meat on the menu at the Park Inn Radisson at Keflavik, Iceland. We spoke to the hotel management and it was withdrawn from sale immediately. Your voice counts – never be afraid to use it!
A safer future
Our End Bycatch campaign lead, Sarah Dolman, has been participating in a government workshop tasked with shaping a ‚UK Dolphin and Porpoise Conservation Strategy‘. It’s thanks to your support we’re able to work at the highest levels for a safer future.
Hunts linked to captivity
A live trained dolphin caught during the brutal hunts in Taiji, Japan can fetch US$150,000. A dead dolphin will only earn a fisherman a few hundred dollars for meat. We’re feeling sad and reflective as another season of slaughter ends.
