Ghost fishing gear | World Animal Protection

Jordi Chias /

Recently I contacted you about the devastating impact lost and abandoned (ghost) fishing gear is having on sea life. Sadly, each year, ghost gear kills more than 130,000 seals, whales, and dolphins and mutilates thousands of others.

Globally, 640,000 tonnes of ghost gear is left in our oceans each year; with 2,400 tonnes estimated to be lost or discarded each year in Australian waters. And, since most of this fishing gear is made of plastic, it can take up to 600 years to degrade.

I’m sure you’d agree that these disturbing statistics are both unacceptable and avoidable. Right now, sea animals desperately need your support.

To reduce ghost gear in our oceans, World Animal Protection founded the “Global Ghost Gear Initiative” (GGGI). Launched in 2015, the GGGI is the first initiative dedicated to tackling the problem of ghost fishing gear at a global scale.Together, we’re also helping local organisations, such as Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary in Scotland’s remote Shetland Islands, who rescue and save sea animals. The speed at which the Hillswick team need to move, and the quality of their facilities, can mean the difference between a seal being rescued, rehabilitated, and surviving, or dying on the beach.

you can help save entangled sea animals today, and prevent them suffering a long, lingering death.

Your kind gift could help Hillswick upgrade their facilities so that more animals can be saved, continue our campaign to reduce the amount of ghost gear in our oceans, and protect vulnerable animals around the world.

We need to act now! And, together, we can turn the tide of suffering for sea animals.
Thank you for all you do for animals.
