News from the world of whales and dolphins
Hi did you know that if we slow down our ships, we’ll benefit the environment and save whales? The even better news is that you can help make this happen!
Transport Ministers from around the world are meeting in London right now. They are discussing a proposal to cap ship speed limits. You can influence this important decision.
Just tweet or email your country’s Transport Minister and ask her or him to support this proposal.
We’re on a roll!
Last month, I was proud to tell you that our Stop Whaling team helped thwart Japan’s efforts to abolish the whaling ban. This month I’ve got even more great news for you – Japan may face international trade sanctions over its hunt of sei whales. Sei whales are the third largest creature on our planet and they’re endangered – you can see them in the photo above and I’m sure you’ll agree that they are pretty amazing creatures.
International trade in sei whale meat and body parts is banned, yet Japan still kills as many as 134 of them every year. CITES, the convention that regulates international trade in endangered species, has agreed that this hunt is illegal and demanded that Japan takes action or face possible sanctions. Our brilliant team was instrumental in achieving this result – thank you for supporting us to make this happen.
With so many bad things happening in the world, it’s important to celebrate the positive and remember that we create change when we stand together. Thank you for your continued support!

If you’re in the UK, US or Canada, you can influence talks happening right now! If we slow ships we will save whales, cut emissions and reduce underwater noise. Just email or tweet your Transport Minister and ask them to support the ship speed limit cap.
Get Whale & Dolphin?
I’m pleased to let you know that your copy of Whale & Dolphin will be with you at the end of November. It’s a great issue with exciting news about whales and dolphins in Scotland. If you’re not signed up, it’s not too late – subscribe today with a donation of £30 or £3 a month.
If you are a teacher or parent, your school can help save the New Zealand dolphin by performing and filming a rugby ‚Haka‘. WDC is an official partner of the Oxford/Cambridge Varsity Match and five lucky schools will be selected to perform their Haka at the game at Twickenham on 6 December!
Orca, Morgan has a baby
Usually, a new orca baby is cause for celebration, but sadly not in this case. Morgan is held captive by theme park, Loro Parque in Tenerife and her little baby will probably never be free or feel the ocean on her skin.
