UK dolphins, porpoises and whales need your help

Whales and dolphins can’t breathe underwater. Trapped in a net, they will panic, just like you would. Many endure terrible wounds and broken bones as they try to escape. When they can’t struggle anymore, they will close their blowhole and suffocate.

Will you help keep them safe by signing our petition on Care2 now? 

Thousands of dolphins, porpoises and whales die in fishing gear every year in UK seas. Most of the protection they have comes from the EU. But, after Brexit they won’t even have that. What then? Even more could die.

I know you’ve helped our campaigns before and I hope we can count on you again. Your support is incredibly valuable. Please spare a few seconds to sign this important petition. Urge the governments of the UK to put laws in place to protect dolphins, porpoises and whales once Britain leaves the EU.

News from the world of whales and dolphins

A very happy New Year to you !

What do you want for whales and dolphins in 2017? I asked some of my colleagues what they would wish for and I’ve made a list. I’d love it if you would add your wishes in the comments section. Let’s see how many we can make come true this year by standing together and speaking out for the remarkable beings with whom we share our blue planet.

I’m starting this year with hope. With your brilliant support and the amazing team of experts I work with at WDC, we have the power to change things for the better. I’m looking forward to sharing all the successes we achieved together in 2016 in your e-news next month. In the meantime, please add your hopes for whales and dolphins in 2017 to our wish list on my blog.

I do have some sad news for you. But even this news comes with hope. Two of the world’s best-known orcas have died. Their lives couldn’t have been more different. Granny was probably more than 100 years old, having escaped the terrible captures that decimated her population in the 1960s and 70s. Granny will always remind us that orcas can live long and incredible lives in the wild.

I wasn’t sure how to feel when Tilikum, the ’star‘ of the movie Blackfish, died at SeaWorld last week. Although I feel sadness, I think my over-riding emotions are relief and hope. Relief that he is no longer enduring the horrible existence that drove him psychotic. And hope that his suffering will not have been in vain – that because the world heard his story through Blackfish, future generations of orcas will not go through what he did. More on both these orcas below.

BA say ’no entry‘

304,996 of you asked British Airways to stop supporting SeaWorld. Apparently, BA couldn’t care less what you think. I took our petition to BA’s HQ this week but they had briefed the security guard not to let us in!

Hi  and welcome to your September e-News from WDC, Whale & Dolphin Conservation. It’s a busy time here (when isn’t it?) as our teams get ready to fight for whales and dolphins at two international meetings. There’s more on that below, as well as some news to make you smile!

On Saturday, our experts will be in Johannesburg at the meeting of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species – the place where decisions are made about which species can be bought and sold. We have a clear mission – we hope to help stop the illegal trade in bottlenose dolphins of the Black Sea. Find out more in the first story below.

Meanwhile, our Stop Whaling team are preparing for the meeting of the International Whaling Commission in Slovenia next month. We are going with a very important goal – to bring an end to Japan’s so-called ’scientific whaling‘. I’ll bring you more on that in next month’s e-News.

The annual dolphin hunt in Taiji, Japan has begun with fifteen Risso’s dolphins killed. This slaughter is fuelled by the captivity industry. I’ll bring you more on how you can get involved next month.

What’s the future for the forgotten dolphins?

Hi and welcome to your August e-news from WDC, Whale & Dolphin Conservation. Our campaign to stop British Airways selling trips to SeaWorld has almost 300,000 supporters now and a question we are asked often is ‚what will happen to all the dolphins if we succeed in ending captivity?‘ The answer is simple: we hope they will go to sea sanctuaries, either to spend their lives in a more natural environment or be rehabilitated for release back to the wild.

Making this a reality is complex, will cost millions and will take time. You can find out more about what’s involved in our exciting projects to create sanctuaries for ex-captive whales and dolphins in the next issue of our quarterly supporter magazine – due out at the end of August – subscribe with a donation of £30 today!

Liebe Freundinnen und Freunde des Regenwaldes,

an der Atlantikküste vor der Olympiastadt Rio de Janeiro spielt sich eine Umwelttragödie ab: Monat für Monat verenden in der Sepetiba-Bucht zehn Guyana Delfine in Fischernetzen. In wenigen Jahren könnte die dortige Population von derzeit lediglich 800 Tieren ausgelöscht sein.

Brasilien steht im Fokus der Kritik von sozialen Bewegungen und Umweltschützern. Das Land und die Stadt Rio de Janeiro haben für die Olympischen Spiele Menschen vertrieben, einen Golfplatz in ein Schutzgebiet gebaut und dabei versagt, die Abwässer der Metropole zu klären. So finden Segelwettbewerbe im dreckigen, belasteten Wasser der Guanabara-Bucht statt. Nachdem die Sportler abgereist sein werden, wird die Tragödie der Delfine weitergehen – wie auch der Kampf für ihr Überleben.

Die Umweltschützer der Organisation Sea Shepherd Legal haben eine Petition zum Schutz der Guyana Delfine in Rios Sepetiba-Bucht gestartet.

Bitte machen auch Sie Brasiliens Politikern klar, dass die Weltöffentlichkeit wegen Olympia nach Rio blickt – und wegen der Umweltzerstörung alarmiert ist. Die Delfine müssen geschützt werden.

Das Thema Delfine in Gefangenschaft scheint auch endlich in Deutschland in den Mittelpunkt zu rücken. Heute um 22:15 Uhr könnt ihr auf ZDF die Dokumentation „Im Einsatz für Delfine“ sehen, bei der Hannes Jaenicke eine deutliche Nachricht gegen das Halten von Delfinen in Gefangenschaft sendet. Hannes besucht auch SeaWorld und Loro Parque!

Wer die Sendung nicht im Fernsehen verfolgen kann, der kann schon jetzt auf der ZDF Mediathek die Dokumentation sehen. Der Link ist unten im Anhang.
