What’s the hidden cost of the cheap palm oil used in Doritos, Cheetos, and other PepsiCo snacks found in your supermarket aisles?
It’s the countless workers exploited at the hands of the palm oil industry in South East Asia — where PepsiCo’s products are made.
There are stories of workers being lured to Indonesia or Malaysia, only to find themselves trapped on palm oil plantations with no money, no passport, with no days off. Those who work spraying pesticides don’t have the proper equipment, and are exposed to toxic chemicals.
Some workers don’t even get paid — especially women and children.
But we can help end the exploitation by showing solidarity with palm oil workers. Our friends at Rainforest Action Network have made a video to expose PepsiCo’s ties to the human cost of palm oil.

PepsiCo buys a whopping 450,000 tonnes of cheap palm oil per year. Its sole producer in Indonesia is IndoFood — one of the largest palm oil growers in the world.
IndoFood has been linked to the suffering of countless workers and the clearing of vast swathes of lush rainforest. To feed the rising global demand for palm oil, the homes of orangutans, rhinos, and elephants are being destroyed.
One by one we’re losing these endangered animals.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Working with our partners, the SumOfUs community has pushed huge companies like McDonald’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, Kellogg’s, Starbucks and many more to adopt sustainable palm oil policies. By standing together, we make ourselves powerful.
We can do it again. But we have to amp up the pressure to force PepsiCo to move.

26. Mai 2016 — Liebe Unterstützerinnen und Unterstützer der CETA-Klage,
maßgeblich durch die angekündigte Verfassungsklage mit fast 70.000 Mitklägern (genau Zahl kommt noch) und auch durch die anhaltenden Proteste gegen CETA und TTIP können wir die ersten Erfolge verbuchen.
– Über CETA wird zuerst das EU-Parlament abstimmen und dann erst der EU-Rat.
– Es wurde in der letzten EU-Ratssitzung bestätigt, dass CETA ein gemischtes Abkommen ist. Das bedeutet, dass alle 28 Parlamente in der EU über CETA abstimmen müssen. Frau Malmström konnte sich nicht damit durchsetzen, dass die Ratifizierung von CETA nur EU-Sache sei.
– Eine vorläufige Inkraftsetzung könnte durch den EU-Rat leider dennoch bewirkt werden. Vorher wird unsere Klage jedoch auf jeden Fall wirksam, so dass eine einstweilige Anordnung möglich wäre, durch die das vorläufige Inkrafttreten verhindert werden könnte.
Im EU-Parlament findet die Abstimmung über CETA wahrscheinlich schon im Juni statt. Selbstverständlich wäre es das Beste, wenn das EU-Parlament CETA ablehnen würde. Wir dürfen jetzt nicht locker lassen.
Deshalb sollen wir jetzt sofort den Informationsstand der EU-Parlamentarier erhöhen. Wir sollen die deutschen und auch die österreichischen Abgeordneten anschreiben. Sie sollen Tausende von Emails bekommen. In dem Email-Verteiler finden Sie alle Adressen.

Professor Alfred de Zayas, unabhängiger Sonderberichterstatter des UNO-Menschenrechtsrates für die Förderung einer demokratischen und gerechten internationalen Ordnung, hat die Generalversammlung der Vereinigten Nationen aufgefordert, das Transpazifische Handelsabkommen TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement) beim Internationalen Gerichtshof (in Den Haag) zwecks Erstellung eines Gutachtens vorzulegen.
In einem Beitrag, der im indischen madhyam.org erschienen ist, erklärte der in Harvard promovierte Professor der Rechtswissenschaften, dass selbst dann, wenn das Abkommen von allen 12 Vertragsparteien, die das TPP-Abkommen ausgehandelt haben, ratifiziert würde, die Unvereinabarkeit des Abkommens mit rechtstaatlichen Grundsätzen bestehen bliebe. Dies sei selbst dann der Fall, wenn das Abkommen nach Unterzeichnung am 4. Februar dieses Jahres in zwei Jahren in Kraft treten würde.
Ferner erklärte de Zayas, die Bürger aller TPP-Länder sollten eine Neuregelung des Kapitels über Investitionen sowie die Abschaffung der ISDS (der privaten Schiedsgerichte) fordern, da beide ein Affront gegen die Demokratie, die Gerechtigkeit, die nationale Souveränität sowie die „Ontologie des Staates als Beschützer des öffentlichen Interesses“ darstellen.
De Zayas fügte hinzu, dasselbe gelte auch für CETA, das Comprehensive Economic und Trade Agreement zwischen der EU und Kanada.
„Jetzt obliegt den Parlamenten die Pflicht, jedes Kapitel des TPP gewissenhaft zu überprüfen, die Regelwerke der einzelnen Staaten zu bewahren sowie konkrete Vorschläge zu formulieren, um Interessenskonflikte aus der Welt zu räumen. Die erforderlichen Änderungen müssen als Voraussetzung für die Ratifizierung gelten.“
»Schließlich«, so fordert der Völkerrechtsexperte, »muss in allen 12 Staaten über Volksabstimmungen dem Willen der Bevölkerungen Gehör verschafft werden, da die Bürger die sozialen Folgen des TPP tragen müssten.“

BREAKING: TTIP leaked
The top-secret Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) text was JUST leaked by Greenpeace — and it’s worse than we thought.
The leaked text proves that corporations and their political allies, especially in the U.S. government, are pushing hard to allow secret corporate courts to override environmental and consumer protections passed by democratically elected officials.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Last week, 90,000 people (including SumOfUs members like you!) marched in the streets of Hanover, Germany against TTIP, and global opposition to this deal is growing by the day.
We’ve also just found out France may scuttle the deal — but if we want to stop it, we need to scale up our work urgently to convince French politicians to outright reject it.

It’s clear from this leak that the TTIP deal would be great for corporate profits, but not for anyone else. American trade negotiators are working hard to pressure EU negotiators to loosen important environmental, consumer protection, and other provisions.
The leaks show the U.S. leading the charge to pressure the EU to allow animal testing for cosmetics, to give corporations more of a say in the negotiations, and to limit labels on genetically modified foods.
Negotiators are trying to give Nestlé, Coca-Cola, and BASF more influence at the negotiating table — and protections against unsafe products like carcinogenic cosmetics are under attack.
All of this means our work opposing this deal is even more important than ever.
