Your April whale and dolphin news
News from the world of whales and dolphins
Hi
I thought I’d share this wonderful image of a minke whale with you. This beautiful whale is a symbol for me of how all whales should be – living their lives, undisturbed in the ocean, without the threat of a harpoon.

You can help us stop the whale hunts
I’m sure you were as saddened as I was to hear that Japan’s whaling boats returned from their Antarctic hunt with 333 minke whales. After the outcry it sparked last year, the Japanese government hasn’t yet released figures on how many of them were pregnant. If we go by the 2016 figures then we can guess that well over 100 of the whales they killed could have been carrying a baby.

You can help. If you have a Twitter account, please take part in our action and ask the EU to say ’no‘ to a trade deal with Japan while Japan kills whales. And please make a small donation to help fund our campaign – even a gift of just £3 or £5 will help.

I have some good news for you too – travel industry giant, Thomas Cook, is taking great strides in the right direction by reviewing its stance on promoting captive whale and dolphin facilities. I’ll bring you more news on that next month as well as on the progress we are making in our project to create the world’s first sanctuary for ex-captive beluga whales.
Until then, thank you for being part of WDC. We couldn’t be here for whales and dolphins without you!
With very best wishes,
Julia Thoms, WDC campaigns manager
Take action – stop whaling
Japan’s whalers returned from their Antarctic hunt with 333 whales. In just over four months they killed 178 females and 155 males despite global condemnation. Please join the growing community who want these hunts to stop.
Well done Thomas Cook
Thomas Cook will drop tours to some captive dolphin parks in response to public pressure. We are making great progress in our campaign to stop UK holiday companies supporting whale and dolphin captivity. Thank you for your brilliant support!
Stop UK dolphin deaths
If you haven’t yet signed our petition to stop dolphins, porpoises and whales dying in fishing gear in UK seas, then please sign now. We only have a small window to make sure the protection they have under the EU does not get lost after Brexit.
Orca families share an inseparable bond – the whole family is there to love, care for and protect each other. But some orca populations are critically endangered. With a gift in your Will, however large or small, you can help us to give orca families the protection they need to survive. |
Calling all ocean lovers! What if you could wear something that was good for the ocean and support WDC at the same time? Fourth Element have released their OceanPositive range which includes swimwear made from recycled fishing nets! Now is your chance to win some great prizes. |
Tell Venues That UniverSoul Circus Needs to Drop Its Cruel Animal Acts!
http://www.peta.org/action/action-alerts/universoul-drop-cruel-animal-acts/
![]() Despite learning about UniverSoul Circus‘ long history of working with notorious animal exhibitors, some venues are still moving forward with plans to host the cruel circus, and we need your help to show them that the public doesn’t support circuses that use animals. UniverSoul has worked for years with disgraced animal exploiters who have lengthy records of animal-welfare violations. A February inspection of the circus by Fulton County Animal Services in Georgia revealed many potentially serious issues, including the following:
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus recently announced that it’s closing in May, citing the public’s changing attitude toward animal circuses. There’s no better time for venues to give audiences what they want by saying no to cruel animal acts. UniverSoul is phenomenal without animals—its human acts are among the best—and cruel animal acts only drag the show down. Please ask venues still planning to host this cruel circus to consider these facts carefully and at least require that scheduled performances go forward without animals. Recipients

VIDEO: Puppy Burned by Acid Is Rescued—Look at Her Now!
http://www.peta.org/blog/video-puppy-burned-acid-rescued-look-now/
When PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk arrived in Mumbai for a visit to our affiliate PETA India, one of the first sights that greeted her was a terrified 4-month-old puppy who had sustained third-degree acid burns on her back and was being attacked by other dogs.
Newkirk immediately took the pup in her arms and rushed her to PETA India’s office, where a veterinarian treated her severe injuries.
The little dog recuperated in PETA India’s office, claiming a favorite spot on a large faux-leather armchair, where she was surrounded by doting staff. Although she was in pain for a while, she never lost her sweet disposition.
Now named Hershey, the rescued pup has recovered from her burns and is living at an animal sanctuary while she waits for the perfect adoptive family.
Hershey has made plenty of new friends, from the human caregivers she loves to shower with kisses to the canine pals she runs and wrestles with. She’s even developed a “reality TV” habit: She loves to watch videos of other dogs on YouTube! Here she is playing outdoors with some of her new friends:
Hershey was just one of millions of stray dogs and cats who struggle to survive on the streets of India. They scrounge for scraps, sleep in doorways and under bridges, and commonly suffer from mange and other contagious diseases. Many of them starve, are struck by vehicles, or are intentionally abused, as Hershey was. PETA India recently worked to expel medical students who tossed a stray puppy off a roof.
PETA India is addressing the root of the homeless-animal crisis by going into villages and spaying, neutering, and vaccinating community dogs and cats—as well as treating them with ivermectin, a heartworm preventive that also addresses parasites, such as mange mites. And they’re using high-profile celebrities to promote the adoption of desi, or native, street dogs.
What You Can Do
You can help save more animals like Hershey by supporting PETA India’s work to improve the lives of animals.

Stop Militaries’ World War on Animals!
http://www.peta.org/action/action-alerts/stop-militaries-world-war-animals/
Nearly 80 percent of NATO nations have confirmed to PETA that they do not use any animals for military medical training exercises—including Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg,Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Turkey. This is clear evidence that there is no need to harm animals to prepare military medical personnel to save lives.
Only six NATO nations—Canada, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, the U.S., and the U.K.—continue to use animals in these barbaric exercises. The Canadian military cuts apart and poisons live pigs with toxic chemicals, the military of Norway shoots live pigs with high-velocity bullets and inflicts numerous life-threatening injuries and bone fractures, the Dutch military confirmed it inflicts „massive abdominal bleeding“ on live pigs and „major injuries to [their] heart and lungs, and neck and head,“ and the military of Denmark—with participation from the U.K. Ministry of Defence—subjects live pigs to horrific bullet and blast wounds. The U.S. military stabs, shoots, dismembers, burns, and kills thousands of animals each year as well.
PETA has released disturbing, never-before-seen photographs of live pigs hung from a wooden frame and shot with rifles and handguns during a military training course in Denmark.
>> Lifelike human simulators that „breathe“ and „bleed“ and can be used in realistic battlefield scenarios have been shown by military and civilian studies to prepare doctors and medics to treat injured humans more effectively than mutilating and killing animals.<<
These barbaric animal laboratories also go against the spirit of Canadian, British, Norwegian, Dutch, and Danish national laws and regulations as well as likely violating European Union law, which requires the use of non-animal training methods whenever possible.
Indeed, in 2014, following efforts by PETA, the Norwegian government rejected an application by the country’s armed forces to shoot, stab, and kill animals in archaic trauma training exercises given that non-animal methods exist, and we’re urging officials to make this decision permanent.
Please take a moment to contact military officials in Canada, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the U.K. and politely urge them to stop harming and killing animals by joining the overwhelming majority of their NATO allies who use exclusively modern non-animal methods for military medical training exercises.
