Blood in the Water: Corky’s Sad Story

https://secure.peta.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=6684&utm_campaign=0517%20bi%20weekly%20recap%20may%20twenty%20one%20EA&utm_source=peta2%20E-Mail&utm_medium=Alert

In 1969 off the coast of British Columbia, a pod of orcas was attacked by humans in boats. Calves were forcibly and violently separated from their mothers—a bond that many wild orcas share for life—and sold into captivity. One of the young orcas taken that day was Corky.

This is her story.

Today, Corky is locked inside one of SeaWorld’s tiny tanks, swimming in endless circles. Her siblings and other members of her pod still swim freely in the ocean, but the only life that Corky knows is one of deprivation, suffering, and loss.

Tell Adventure Student Travel That Marine Parks Are No ‚Adventure‘ for Orcas!

PETA

Action Alert

Adventure Student Travel—a company that helps coordinate trips for students—still promotes SeaWorld and the Miami Seaquarium as great places for students, Girl Scouts, and other groups to go, despite hearing from PETA that these marine parks enslave orcas, force them to perform ridiculous tricks, and deny them everything that is natural and important to them.

Please tell Adventure Student Travel that there’s nothing to be learned from watching captive animals being forced to perform pointless tricks and swim laps around tiny concrete tanks, and help us urge the company to cut ties with marine abusement parks.

Free Lolita! PETA Buys Stock in Miami Seaquarium’s Parent Company

http://www.peta.org/blog/free-orca-lolita-peta-buys-stock-miami-seaquarium-parent-company/

Written by Michelle Kretzer | March 6, 2017

Lolita, the solitary orca at the Miami Seaquarium, has spent nearly half a century in captivity. She has been without the companionship of another orca since 1980, when her tankmate, Hugo, died in an apparent suicide by ramming his head repeatedly into the tank wall. Today, following the 37th anniversary of Hugo’s death, PETA has purchased stock in the Miami Seaquarium’s parent company, Parques Reunidos, and will use shareholder opportunities to work to win the orca Lolita’s freedom.

Parques Reunidos is also the parent company of Marineland in Antibes, France, which holds four orcas captive: Wikie, Inouk, Moana, and Keijo. At least 12 others have died there since 1970, including 19-year-old Valentin, who succumbed in 2015 to severe internal injuries, after a storm caused the oxygenation and filtration systems in his tank to stop working, leaving him trapped in a pool of muddy water. Just months earlier, his mother, Freya, also died, decades before the maximum life expectancy of female orcas in the wild.

“Lolita’s extended family is still swimming freely in the ocean, and we want her to be reunited with them,” said PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is calling for all these highly intelligent, social animals to be released into seaside sanctuaries, allowing them to enjoy a more natural life and be rehabilitated for potential release into the ocean, where they belong.”

What You Can Do

Join PETA and hundreds of thousands of other animal advocates in calling on Parques Reunidos to retire all five suffering orcas to coastal sanctuaries.

Urge WestJet to Stop Selling SeaWorld Tickets

http://www.peta.org/action/action-alerts/westjet-stop-selling-seaworld-tickets/

WestJet—the second-largest air carrier in Canada—is still selling SeaWorld tickets and tours, despite learning that the company’s cruel practices include confining sensitive and intelligent orcas to concrete tanks, giving them psychoactive drugs, and subjecting them to overwhelming physical and emotional stress, which has resulted in the deaths of both orcas and humans. Dozens of other corporate partners cut ties with the abusement park years ago, but WestJet continues to profit from animal suffering. Urge the airline to do right by animals and end its affiliation with SeaWorld.

sad orcas at SeaWorld

It’s been more than three years since the release of the documentary Blackfish—whose „star,“ Tilikum, recently died after 33 years in a concrete tank—but orcas at SeaWorld are still swimming in endless circles and breaking their teeth by gnawing in frustration on the concrete corners and metal bars of their tiny tanks. And other dolphins are still being impregnated, sometimes forcibly after being drugged. Facing sinking attendance, SeaWorld finally announced last year that it would end its sordid orca-breeding program—which has since been made illegal in California—but this action does nothing for the 22 orcas, more than 100 other dolphins and whales, and many other animals who are suffering in the company’s tanks right now.

It’s unconscionable to make the currently captive, miserable orcas live the rest of their lives, up to another 40 years, in these conditions. SeaWorld needs to build coastal sanctuaries—where these animals could feel ocean currents, hear and communicate with wild pods, and dive deep—and we need to show WestJet that its customers care deeply about the welfare of all the animals suffering at marine parks.

Please urge Gregg Saretsky, the president and CEO of WestJet, to end the company’s relationship with SeaWorld today.

Orcas at Seaworld

SeaWorld Orlando is hosting a „Seven Seas Food Festival,“ and we need your help to let the entertainers scheduled to perform know that it’s wrong to support a company that deprives complex, emotional, and social orcas of everything that’s natural and important to them.

Even though compassionate artists and dozens of other bands— such as Willie Nelson, Cheap Trick, REO Speedwagon, Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Barenaked Ladies, and 38 Special— canceled their performances at the abusement park, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Lee Brice, Bill Engvall, Styx, Justin Moore, ZZ Top, Phillip Phillips, Village People, the Commodores, Oscar D’León, Olga Tañón, and Grupo Manía are still set to participate, which will lead their fans to support a company that forces highly intelligent orcas to do confusing tricks and live in concrete tanks that are, to them, the size of a bathtub.

Entertainers listen to their fans, so please ask these performers to cancel their appearances at SeaWorld.

Tell TobyMac, Francesca Battistelli, and Skillet to Cancel SeaWorld Performances!

Action Alert

http://www.seaworldofhurt.com/rip-tilikum/
Just one week after Tilikum’s tragic death, SeaWorld Orlando is putting on a Christian music festival called Praise Wave in a desperate attempt to lure people to its failing theme park. Even though top singers—such as Martina McBride, Willie Nelson, and Trace Adkins—as well as dozens of other bands canceled their performances at the abusement park, TobyMac, Francesca Battistelli, and Skillet are still set to participate, which will lead unknowing Christians to support a company that forces highly intelligent orcas to do confusing tricks and live in concrete tanks that are, to them, the size of a bathtub.

Please ask these musicians to set an example of what it means to be a good steward of God’s creation by canceling their performances at Praise Wave.

Tilikum, SeaWorld’s Most Exploited Orca, Has Died

PETA

Action Alert

Dear Sylvia,

Tilikum—the ‘star’ of Blackfish, the damning documentary about SeaWorld’s miserable practice of ripping orca babies from their ocean families and then breeding them in captivity—is dead following decades of exploitation in the marine-mammal abusement industry.

Tilikum died without ever again knowing freedom, along with 11 of his children who died prematurely before him and leaving 10 more who will continue to suffer in tiny concrete tanks.

PETA is calling on SeaWorld to do the right thing and move the remaining orcas to coastal sanctuaries, where they could enjoy a more natural life, and on caring people to shun facilities that enslave animals for our “entertainment.”

Thank you for your compassion for animals.

Sincerely,

John Di Leonardo Siganture

Urge Officials to Keep Animals Out of SeaWorld Abu Dhabi!

http://www.peta.org/action/action-alerts/urge-officials-keep-animals-out-seaworld-abu-dhabi/

SeaWorld enslaves animals in tiny concrete tanks at marine abusement parks across the country, and now, it’s expanding its failing business around the world. Please urge officials in Abu Dhabi—the capital of the United Arab Emirates—to ensure that SeaWorld is not allowed to set up shop unless it doesn’t hold dolphins, seals, polar bears, penguins, or any other animals captive at its new park.

Since the release of Blackfish—the documentary that exposes SeaWorld’s violent capture and cruel confinement of orcas—the park’s attendance has tanked, top executives have been ousted, celebrities such as Harry Styles have urged fans to stay away, and hundreds of employees have been laid off, including 320 just last week. In 2014, the park lost 1 million visitors, and in 2015, SeaWorld San Diego was the worst-performing major theme park in the world. Meanwhile, support for Disney, Six Flags, and Cedar Fair—which do not rely on abusive animal entertainment—has swelled. Succumbing to public pressure, SeaWorld recently agreed to end its sordid orca-breeding program—which has since been made illegal in California—but this does nothing for the 168 other dolphins and whales who are currently swimming in endless circles and breaking their teeth in frustration as they gnaw on the concrete corners and metal bars of their tiny tanks. And it does nothing for the 38 orcas, dozens of beluga whales, more than 100 dolphins, and innumerable smaller animals—such as sharks, pinnipeds, and penguins—who have already died, many of them prematurely.

Please send a polite letter to His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, the chair of Miral Asset Management and the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, urging him not to allow SeaWorld to use Abu Dhabi as a life raft for its failing business model and to prohibit the company from setting up shop unless it commits to not holding animals in captivity.

13. Nov. 2016 — Liebe Tierfreunde,

Kathleen

(Edit) In the 60’s & 70’s, Seaworld took 60 members from the Southern Resident killer whale clan, leaving just 70 whales. Around the same time the Federal Govt. put in 4 dams on…
